Distance

It seems to me that with any representation of landscape in art there is always an implicit distance  that risks alienating the viewer from the scene.

I wanted to draw attention to this and rather than use the usual techniques of perspective I thought, as a digital artist, that I could reference how we experience the natural environment, always at arms length, in a different way.

This time as a result of the resolution that I have given to the main focus of each of my photographs, the viewer has to physically put distance between them and the image in order to find the usual landscape effects.

Close up and the mystery is revealed. Our world is made up of colours and light , pixels and glitch. Paradoxically resembling wood grain, the very thing they are meant to be representing from afar.

Subjectively, I find an abstract beauty in a less-than-perfect visual documentation of misty mornings in the English countryside.

I think this too can lead the viewer to a sense of distance as we struggle and fail to capture the natural world that’s increasingly objectified, observed rather than felt.

I have them printed onto beautiful, warm  Hahnemühle photorag archival paper.

The image measures 297×420mm.

I hand sign and number each of the 5 editions.
